We all know there’s some stupidity involved with the thievery of anything, considering it’s against the law and value of the consequences often trumps the item obtained. However true this may be, thieves now have a new reason to be leery of of what they take. Technology guru Mark Bao recently had his MacBook Air stolen, and unlike most cases where all hope is gone, he’s turned the tables.
Now we come down to the stupidity bit, the thief in question took the laptop and commenced using it without any sort of precautions (ie: wiping the hdd). Mark found a way to trace what the thief had been doing on the laptop through the Backblaze automatic online backups. His finding included a few snapshots of the crook, as well as the his Facebook page, and best of all a dance video recorded from the stolen merchandise.
Although Mark has more than enough info to turn the case over to the authorities, he’s hoping to shame the bandit into giving it back by posting his embarrassing dance video on YouTube. This goes to show you crime doesn’t pay but sometimes it can be quite a amusing. Said thief better hope his future cell mates don’t see the video, could lead to more extra “special” attention in an already undesirable situation.
