One less option for Android Developers: FileSonic nixes file sharing after MegaUpload Debacle

FileSonic Disables File Sharing

The Internet is quickly becoming a less-than-friendly place for people looking to share files with their peers.  While, one of last week’s biggest stories wasn’t directly related to Android, you’d better believe the MegaUpload dismantling and arrests are definitely taking a toll on our community. The here-yesterday-gone-today file sharing service was used by many Android developers in the community to distribute their work to the masses. Granted, MegaUpload’s service was surely also used to spread its fair share of pirated material.

The latest news brewing is about FileSonic disabling file sharing for all of its millions of users. The service can “only be used to upload and retrieve files you have uploaded personally,” according to a note posted on the site’s home page. The company has also suspended its affiliates rewards program, which paid users when people downloaded their files. No reason was given by FileSonic for their actions, though many people are obviously linking this situation to MegaUpload.

So, if you’re an Android developer and you’re hosting your files on FileSonic, now is the time to start looking into other options if you want your work to receive any public recognition. One place y0u may want to try is Dev-Host.org, which offers “the ultimate free file hosting service”. Your files can be up to 512mb each, and you can upload up to 10 files at a time using the page’s user-friendly interface. Of course, that is if Dev-Host and every other similar website don’t follow FileSonic’s lead and shut down shop.

What do you think, folks? Is there any way that file sharing can be done in a legitimate manner? Last time I checked, developing and distributing custom Android ROMs didn’t violate any copyright laws, though members of our community are now dealing with the consequences from the actions of those who did. If this is how the future of te Internet is shaping up, I don’t like it one bit.
