Generally speaking, I’m not usually a fan of in-ear headphones. I’ve owned several mp3 players in my days, and each one of them came with those ill-manufactured circular speakers that, unless I actually jam them in my eardrums, always seem to want to fall out of my ear. I dunno, maybe I have irregularly sized ear holes, but that’s besides the point. I typically opt for the comfy, over-the-ear headphones that unfortunately make you look like you’re a DJ, about to scratch and spin like nobody’s business. That being said, I’ll take comfort and quality over being fashionable any day of the week. If a pair of headphones sounds good and doesn’t hurt my hears after prolonged use, count me in.
I’ve been able to test out a pair of Coloud’s in-ear headphones over the past few days, and I’ve run them through the mud and back already. The first thing I would like to note about these headphones is that they sound pretty decent. Don’t expect quality comparable to a pair of Klipsch or Bose earbuds, but don’t expect the expensive price tag that comes along with models of that caliber either. One thing that I do like about them — they can handle my PC, Android phone, tablet and iPod — each at full volume, without getting distorted or cracking. Of course, that’s a bit loud for my liking, so I usually roll at about 75-80% and they sound awesome.
Another thing I dislike about many earbuds — they begin to hurt my ears after using them for an extended period. In many instances, I can’t use them for more than 30-45 minutes without having to let my ears “breathe”. I wont sugar coat things in this review — after using the Coloud in-ear headphones, I still don’t believe a pair of 100% comfortable earbuds exists (yet). If they do, I’ve yet to discover a pair. However, these headphones aren’t all that uncomfortable. After several test runs, I found I could keep them in my ear for at least an hour before needing to “come up for air”.
The design of these headphones is definitely headed in the right direction. Rather than having two identical speakers, each headphone is distinguishable and truly designed for use in the proper ear (don’t use the left bud in your right ear, or the other way around, or they won’t sit the way they’re supposed to in your ear).
Now, not only do these earbuds produce high quality audio, they can also be used for making voice calls or using voice commands on your devices, as they have a built-in microphone. I made a few test calls to see how well the mic works, and I was pleasantly surprised with the results. The caller on the other end of the line had no problems hearing me, both walking down the and while driving a car, I haven’t had any issues on that end.

My overall grade? I give the Coloud in-ear headphones a 4-out-of-5, strictly because they do get a bit uncomfortable after a while of having them jammed in your ears. The manufacturer did a pretty good job, in terms of design, but I still think somebody needs to figure out how to make an earbud you can wear for multiple hours without it bothering your ear.
