Review: Wrapsol Ultra Phone Skin for Google Nexus One and More

Wrapsol is the creator of the latest dry-application protective film for you mobile device called Wrapsol ULTRA.  They make skins for mobile phones, games machines and much more.  They sent us a couple of skins to try out for ourselves and I have to say that it pretty nice.  No more spray bottles and wetting your device, it’s a completely dry installation process.  Here’s what they had to say on their site.

With touchscreen technology becoming more pervasive every day, strong, dependable protection from daily damage, wear and tear is critical.

To ensure both the safety and design integrity of your device, Wrapsol ultra drop + scratch protection system utilizes our patent-pending dry-application repositionable film that releases air bubbles while eliminating any risk of moisture damage. However, for traditionalists — the original Wrapsol scratch protection uses a conventional application process and comes with an optically clear screen film and a proprietary matte body-film that enhances grip and eliminates fingerprints.

And because everyone should do their part to protect the environment, every sale of every Wrapsol product results in us making a cash contribution to Cool Earth, an international charity that protects endangered rainforest around the world to combat global warming, protect ecosystems.

So thanks in advance for purchasing Wrapsol — the strongest, easiest and fastest-to-apply protection you can get for all the digital devices that connect you to your world.

The contents of the package include:

  • Custom-cut Film
  • Microfiber towelette
  • Squeege
  • Instructions
  • Lifetime Warranty

Here a photo of the contents unpacked and laid out.  The Nexus One skin is laying on top of the boxes, but it’s real hard to see as it crystal clear.

I tried to take the following shot of the skin laid out on my desk, but again, it’s not that easy to make it out.  The film itself is definitely feels thicker than other products I’ve tried and I would feel a lot more comfortable dropping my phone with this protective shield installed than some of the others I’ve tried.

I was concerned when I first felt the product that I would lose sensitivity on my screen but once it was installed, you hardly even know its there.  Some of the other products I’ve used have an orange peel finish that looks like lots of small dimples in the skin. Wrapsol ULTRA is very smooth and crystal clear and wold certainly recommend it from my initial impressions.

The instructions are pretty straightforward and easy to follow.  Simply peel off the backing and apply it to your device.

I was going to photo the process of applying the protective film but it was so quick compared to previous products I used, I didn’t really see the point.  Simply align any cut outs for areas like the camera, ear piece, etc and slowly lay the product down using the squeegee to push out any trapped air.

Here’s a few shots of my Google Nexus One after the installation was complete.

I did find it hard to line up the corners with each other.  You have to be careful not to stretch the film at all while your applying it or it can end up overshooting where it’s supposed to fit.  This happened a couple of times during my install but I simply peeled back the film and re-applied it being careful not to pull too hard.

I did end up with just a few tiny bubbles under the film but these will disappear over time as the film is designed to allow trapped air to escape.

As you can see from the picture below, your device will end up being very shiny, which actually makes it look quiet nice, but I can see some people not liking this look.  The screen certainly did not end up being any more shiny than it already was and my display was very clear through the film.

You can find out more information on the Wrapsol website and order your installation kit directly on the site.

Here’s a quick video taken from the Wrapsol website showing an iPhone wrapped in Wrapsol Ultra and then placed in a bag of sharp and heavy objects and a handful of sand for good luck. The bag is shaken, twisted and turned and the iPhone is removed, unmarked.
