[Rumor] ASUS and Google prepping 3G enabled Nexus 7 Tablet

There is no such thing as the perfect device. While you might think your device is perfect in every way shape and form, others will want or need something else. The Google Nexus 7 is one fine little tablet. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t areas that others wish were different. For instance, some of you really would have liked to see a microSD card slot. Another area that many would have liked to see is a mobile data connection option, such as 3G  or 4G provided by your carrier. As is stands, you only have data access using Wi-Fi or tethering using your current device. While that option isn’t tricky, not everyone’s plans or devices allow for tethering.

There is some potentially interesting information floating about. According to Paul O’Brien from MoDaCo, ASUS and Google are already in production of a 3G version of the Nexus 7. The current hardware will remain the same, but it will include the ability to connect to your mobile carrier. Details on if they will be SIM only, unlocked or contracted to carriers who wish to sell it are still unavailable. Claims do say that the new 3G enabled Nexus 7 tablets should be announced, and possibly launched in the next 6 weeks.

The real question is “does it matter”. Have you been holding out on your purchase because you wanted one that would go more places and that you could add to your account? Hopefully with the small modification it won’t effect the price tag much if at all. If the carriers are gonna get involved and start peddling them at stores, then we could see a whole host of price tag variances.
