Samsung acquires connectivity startup MOVL

MOVL

Samsung has acquired multiscreen company MOVL. Little is known about the details of the acquisition, but it has been reported that Samsung has been working on better integration between mobile devices and Samsung’s smart TVs.

A spokesman for MOVL released the following statement regarding the acquisition:

“In April 2013, two years after inception, MOVL has officially joined forces with Samsung. We are now a part of Samsung Electronics, and we are excited to combine our multiscreen capabilities with Samsung’s scale and innovation in its device ecosystem.”

MOVL has worked on a number of second-screen games and applications. For instance, WeDraw is an application developed for Samsung TVs and Google TV devices allowing users to draw pictures on their smartphones while others guess what the image is.

The team at MOVL also developed Kontrol.tv, a platform for SmartTVs and mobile devices. MOVL eventually gave developers the opportunity to create their own applications to connect TVs via the cloud or smartphones.

While the acquisition is still in its early stages, we will have to wait and see what Samsung has in store for the MOVL platform.
