Today, Samsung has announced its successor to the Exynos 5 processor that many of us find in our Galaxy S devices. Called the Exynos 5420, the new processor is still technically in the Exynos 5 Octa family, however possesses 3D graphics processing abilities that are twice that of the currently available processor.
The Exynos 5420 carries on Samsung’s processor development mantra of big.LITTLE, combining four ARM Cortex-A15 processors running at 1.8GHz with a subset of ARM Cortex-A7 Â processors running at 1.3GHz; apparently, this new arrangement of processors will give the new Exynos 5 Octa a 20 percent processing boost over the old model.
The Exynos 5420 is planning to make an appearance at SIGGRAPH 2013 in California later this year. This new processor is already being shopped and Samsung says it will start mass producing the mobile processors in August. This is actually an interesting development as we fully expected the inevitable Galaxy Note 3 to launch with a Snapdragon 800, but if Samsung is creating its own high-powered processor, then this might be the prime candidate in the eventual Note 3, at least in the international version.
Do you think this new Exynos 5 Octa processor gives Samsung enough of a chance in the processor wars? Or does the Snapdragon 800 have this new processor dead-t0-rights? Let us know what you think in the comments.
