Samsung Copies an App for the Galaxy S III, That App’s Sales Increase 600%

In the digital world of phones and tablets, its kind of hard not to copy certain features. We have seen our fair share of patent lawsuits between the big boys, and a lot of the lawsuits are pretty ridiculous. So what happens when a major OEM decides to take an awesome idea that exists in the Play Store, and put it on their brand new highly anticipated phone? Well obviously you would sue! But what if it increases the sales of your paid app 600 percent?

Stickit! was created by Cerrato Renaud. It basically gave us the ability to watch videos while performing other tasks. Pretty mind-blowing actually. You could place the video window where ever you wanted to on the screen, as well as resize it.

“While digging into the Android source code, I found a way to make floating apps,” Renuad explained, “Android wasn’t made for such apps, I had to struggle with a lot of limitations, but the results were acceptable…while on the train and watching my favorite series on my tablet, I felt the need to read and compose emails at the same time. Stick it! was born.” Pretty innovative and inspiring right there, don’t you think?

Sales for Stickit! were slow at first, but after the unveiling of the Galaxy S III, sales shot up 600 percent. That would make any app developer happy.

“Sure, it’s a competitor, but this feature, thanks to the press coverage, will help people to get to my others apps,” Renaud says. So it looks like he is not upset about the recent activity of his app. Another app called OverSkreen, that brings this same feature to a browser has also seen an increase in downloads.

So it looks like the developers of both apps are reaping the benefits of the SGSIII’s “rip-off” feature. Only thing is, they would have seen more money if Samsung would have bought that feature from them. Though that be true, the developers are just enjoying the fact that their app is being downloaded and I think that is pretty cool that they are not taking legal action for it. You hear that Apple?
