Samsung patent filing could bring device customization’s to a whole new Level

Forget about picking up that silly little pink gel skin. Forget about buying laser etched battery doors and cleverly placed stickers or jewels. Samsung is looking to change that our device looks with a few clicks on your screen. Ya, you read that right. Apparently a new FCC filing by Samsung is looking to make your entire device customizable, beyond your main screen. This revolves round what they are calling “smart device skins.” Giving the end-user th ability to set images for the top, bottom and side of the front of your device, and even potentially the rear of your device as well.

While Samsung will most likely be custom building this into some new future super phone, but plans to sell the technology as an accessory. The product is described as a ‘film layer’ that a person can install on their device on their own. Leaving the important cut ours for speaker, cameras, ect. The filing doesn’t get to in-depth as far as how it all works. One could conceive it being Bluetooth orientated with some sort of battery and receiver build into a rear panel possibly. With Samsung‘s technology of Flexible AMOLED screens looking pretty promising this could be the first applicable use for them on smart phones.

There could potentially be a lot of downsides to it though. Many of which will be based on how they make it happen. If it is built into a product it should do just fine, but would give you more power consuming screen resulting in the need for a bigger and better battery to actually use it. We have no doubt that Samsung is already messing around with prototype builds of these. As far as consumers are concerned, this is still just a patent filing that may never make it to real world use, or at least not this year anyways.

What do you think of the idea? If you could set a photo to be around the front and one for the rear of your device, would you buy it? What if they made it capable of playing a movie? I would buy essentially a dual screen device if the one on the front was my phone and the rear was just a  display panel for movies and photos. I wouldn’t even mind if it was double the thickness of today’s devices.
