Samsung’s cloud dreams are underway thanks to recent purchase of mSpot

Before the HUGE event that was the unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S III, we caught wind of a few rumors. One was that Samsung would be showing of a new tablet at the unpacked event, that didn’t pan out. The other was the release of a new cloud storage system from Samsung. Well, that didn’t happen either. They did however get a deal in for 50GB of Dropbox storage, so that was nice. The rumor though isn’t entirely dead.

This afternoon Samsung announced that they have acquired mSpot. mSpot is another cloud storage locker/streaming solution that exists in the world. The purchase of mSpot by Samsung will give them a leg up on the competition and help bring Samsung their own cloud services. The plans are to bring the cloud-based entertainment experience of music, video and radio services to Samsung products.

“mSpot shares our vision to bring a best-in-class cloud and streaming entertainment experience to consumers, and they’ve backed it up with innovative technical solutions from a great engineering team,” said TJ Kang, Senior Vice President of Samsung Electronics’ Media Solution Center.

Currently mSpot allows users to upload music to the cloud for playback on compatible devices as well as movie rentals the day of, or after, it hits shelves on DVD. mSpot even has their services pre-installed on some Sprint and AT&T devices as with the radio services.

The acquisition will provide a cloud-based entertainment experience of music, video and radio services for users of Samsung devices, while extending mSpot’s cloud and streaming solutions to a broader base of global entertainment fans. The combination will extend mSpot’s top class cloud and streaming services while further enhancing Samsung’s mobile and tablet device entertainment offerings. mSpot’s entertainment services will be a key integrated offering on newly announced Samsung mobile devices.

While we don’t think that the service will get its start as a pre-installed app for the Samsung Galxy S III, we do fully expect a full Samsung cloud-service to be landing sometime this year. If they pull of a competitive approach to uploading files to be streamed, including all file types and no size limits, then it could be a huge deal. If they limit to many aspects of the service then it will be just another service to check out but not worry about.

What do you guys think? With Samsung buying up a company that already has all the essential services and hardware in place, do you think they could make it huge, or will they kill it? Be sure to check out some of their current applications out below the following full press release.
