Satechi 12 Port USB Hub: A quintessential accessory for the tech savvy Individual

By now you guys should know that we cover and review things that look more towards the long-term use of your current device and potentially towards other devices you own. After all, who wants to buy three different chargers for three different devices? In most homes, offices, cubicle, desks and hotel rooms, physical plug space can be limited. In many situations you have to search them out, plug-in certain device across a room, sacrifice the second plug for another device and sometimes use the bathroom to charge up your tablet, external battery pack or possibly your Bluetooth headset. Needless to say, the world is power-hungry and tech savvy people like us are rather large consumers of power. Over the years I have acquired a number of cables, cords, chargers, charging blocks and more. Some have dual port for the car or power outlets at home or on the road. No matter how many chargers and cables I have, I often find myself out of local space to charge things up.  By this I mean devices and items charging right next to me without having to spread them out to various power outlets. This same conflict is easily present when talking about using your PC to charge devices or transferring data from thumb drives and hard drives. A typical PC with 6 USB ports just doesn’t cut it anymore. All of this talk is in place to get you to think about your frustrations and issues over lack of USB power or connections available at any given time in your life or day. This is where the Satechi 12 port USB hub can really make your life, your day and your travels much more pleasant.

In my life, I have six USB plugs on my desktop PC. Between the printer, the wireless keyboard and mouse, 1 TB external Hard Drive, Neat Receipt Scanner and webcam, I am down to just one USB port open for other things that doesn’t require me unplugging something else. I got fed up with having so many various accessories that I love and use often having to be charged separately all over the house. I began searching for potential solutions to my problem. I could easily get a USB hub that would solve my issue, but after using other USB hubs I have found that they don’t always efficiently charge everything. I finally settled on the Satechi 12 port USB Hub. I chose this unit for a few simple reasons. 12 ports is plenty, where as the typical 4 or 6 ports doesn’t always handle what I need in my life. It looked nice and it had great sounding specs and switches. I like switches. It is a personal thing.

So what does the Satechi 12 port USB Hub offer that others don’t? Quite a lot actually. In typical USB hubs that you might purchase, they plug directly into you PC and are powered by the PC.  This works, but limits flow of data and also limits flow of power. A USB port can only push out so much power to your devices. While they will all charge, chances are it is at a much slower rate. The Satechi 12 Port not only plugs into your PC, but it also plugs into the wall. This gives your ports a constant supply of house power to give your devices the juice they need at any given time.

As with any hub you will find on the market, this one plugs directly into your PC. Obviously offering you 12 ports for printers, hard drives, thumb drives, digital camera or anything else your USB heart desires. It gives you a direct connection to your PC for charging devices, transferring data and plenty of other things you would need it for. The device has one heck of a transfer rate ability. Clocking in at 480Mbps, it gives you a fair amount of transfer speed from one device to the next.

While it meets the general needs of a heavy PC user, it also meets the needs of a traveling techy. With its wall plug power adapter, you can plug it in anywhere there is a power source and charge 12 devices at once. Of course this also means that you can connect it to your laptop and run banks of external hard drives, USB Drives and portable scanners without having to switch plugs at various times to make it happen. It would also let anyone else who needs a USB port to charge, or transfer you a video or data, a simple way to hook into your laptop or PC.

On to the switches.  The Satechi 12 port hub offers two switches that control the 12 ports on the unit. Switch one turns on the first 6 and switch two turns on the other 6. Giving you the control to manage what is on and connected at the push of a switch. To make things easy to recognize, each set of six has blue LED’s that light up the active ports. If you are counting the ports on the top you will only count 11. The twelfth is located on the front of the unit.

As you can see in the image below, I only have five devices connected at the moment. I could consolidate down to just one 6 port sections, but I like having space. Also, it currently isn’t connected to my PC. It is just connected to the single power plug I had available. I am pretty much in love with having this thing around and can’t wait for our trip to Miami in May where I plan to use this exclusively to charge everyone’s devices at the condo. I will be sure to add some more photos then and possibly some quotes from the family on how much they love it.

You can pick up the Satechi 12 port USB Hub from Satechi or Amazon. Interestingly enough, their sales links go to Amazon. This particular unit runs for $27.99. Which is a pretty great deal. The link to purchase it is to below and is the one to the far left. I also included some of their other products that I thought some of you guys might like to take a look at as well.
