At CES 2015 I swung by Saygus to take a closer look at what was being touted as a super-phone that sported Android. While there I talked with the founder and got some great insight into the device and why it was created in the first place. More importantly though, I got a chance to check out a near production version of the device first hand. The Saygus V², which is V (squared) , carries some pretty impressive specs for a start-up phone manufacturer. It carries a 5-inch 1920 x 1080 display (445 ppi), 21MP rear camera 13MP front facing camera (both with image stabilization), 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 3GB of RAM, 64GB on board storage and launches with Android 4.4.4.
While impressive, the specs do get better the further you investigate the device. Even though the Saygus V² carries 64GB internal storage, it also supports micro SD cards. Yes, that is plural on purpose. It offers dual micro SD card slots allowing for 256GB of additional storage if you have a pair of 128GB micro SD cards hanging around. This might be over kill to some, but it was one of the things the owner wanted desperately. I can’t say that I am all that upset either as I am also a big physical storage guru myself. I would love nothing more than to have 1TB of storage inside my mobile devices at all times. It is coming.
Moving along the long list of other things the Saygus V² has going for it is Harmon Kardon speakers and mics, noise cancelling cypher sound technology, a fractal antennae (which is what looks like a design on the bottom back of the device), dual-band Wi-Fi, 60GHz wireless gaming and mobile beam tech, biometric fingerprint scanner (which is a swipe version) on the side and wireless Qi charging. Should I continue? How about a 3,100 mAh batter, is coated with an IPX7 rated nano-coating to make it water-resistant and has a kevlar back and sides.
Developers are going to have a field day with the device because it gives root access out of the box and supports multi-booting from micro SD cards and internal storage, which is an exclusive feature to the V².
All of this in a GSM unlocked device makes it an enthusiasts dream machine really. If you pre-order your Saygus V² you will get some limited edition launch accessories. Pricing details haven’t been made official, but we have heard somewhere under the $600 price point is being targeted. This could be the target device for a lot of people who think the Nexus 6 is to large and wanted something smaller. Saygus did keep the device fairly stock and when I talked with them they seemed to be on point with making sure Android updates come through. Not that it will be an issues since it is unlocked and root access is available.
Head over to Saygus.com and take a closer look at this super Android device as soon as possible. Registration for pre-orders have been live for a while, but they are scheduled to close down on January 29th at 11 a.m. PST. That should be about the time we get full pricing details and pre-orders open up. Keep tabs on announcements here as well as their Twitter account @Saygus.
