Shared data plans being prepped by AT&T, will it be a Fail?

This is a rather interesting concept. Rather than paying a data fee per line, AT&T is working to bring a data feature to family plans. I told T-Mobile for year that they should get into this before the other carriers beat them to the punch, but of course that fell on deaf ears. Having the ability to add unlimited text messaging at the BAN level, or account level, versus each line just made sense. Why not offer the same ability to family plans for data. In my case this could be a great benefit since I have three smartphones on my account and each has their own data plan added.

We have heard that Verizon is working to bring this option to their customers and, now so is AT&T. Still no sign of this headed to T-Mobile or Sprint yet though. According to a system screen shot that Engadget was able to acquire the features are still in a ‘to be determined’ status. At least it looks like they are working to bring something a bit more beneficial to its customers.

I can’t help but wonder how ridiculous these plans might be though. Will they toss out some crappy 2GB data plan for $30 shared, or will they think out side the box and offer at least 6GB shared plans for say $40. Inevitably this would let those on the plan that use little data still have access and grant the larger users a bit more wiggle room.

Whats your take on the shared data plan idea? Will they make it a flat rate that is almost to low to make it worth switching, or will they make it a true perk to have?
