This morning our favorite VoIP service, Skype, was purchased by the software giant Microsoft. The purchase price is coming in at a reported $8.5 Billion and was approved by both company’s board of directors already.
According to the press release Skype will become a new business division within Microsoft. Current Skype CEO, Tony Bates, will assume the title of president of the Microsoft Skype Division. This will of course increase Skype’s ability to improve its current service and give it access to many more platforms such as Xbox Kinect and Windows Phone7.
This doesn’t necessarily mean that the Skype app for Android devices will fall victim to the the giant and be pulled though. The press release does state that MS will continue to invest in Skype clients on non-Microsoft platforms. Which is the best move for the company. After all Microsoft is in the business to make money not lose it. It should be interesting to see how their influence of the service will turn out.
Since this announcement could end up turning into a total disaster, what other VoIP services is everyone else using on their Android device right now?
