Sony predicts it will sell 38 million handsets in 2015

Sony has had a particularly rough ride in the smartphone market of late – after a barnstorming run with the Sony Xperia Z and Xperia Z1, Sony’s fortunes started going south very quickly with ordinary release after ordinary release and losses across the board. So much so that Sony CEO said that even a splitting off of the mobile division at Sony was possible given its current performance. Sony has since tried to streamline its operations, only dealing with high and mid range devices. However, Sony predicts it will sell 38 million handsets in 2015 and this prediction largely stems from the confidence they have gained from the Sony Xperia Z4 and its future lineup of devices.

This prediction is of course lower than previous years (down from 39.2 million), but considering the type of hit Sony has taken, it’s still decidedly optomistic. The report from DigiTimes also attributes some of this confidence to the relationship Sony is building with original design manufacturers (ODMs) in Taiwan, and that they have already started to design 6-inch smartphones for Sony. It’s definitely an interesting situation and we’ll have to keep an eye on it throughout the year.
