Last week, we learnt of Sony’s announcement of its successor to the original SmartWatch, the SmartWatch 2, featuring NFC and Android-based apps that would run on the 1.6-inch touchscreen. The press release that accompanied the announcement last week also stated that an international launch of the device would come in September, so you can imagine how surprised we were when we heard a U.K. retailer has reported that the Sony SmartWatch 2 will be available for sale from July 15th.
I guess if you look at the semantics, the press release doesn’t specifically state that there won’t be a focussed, localized launch somewhere in the world. If this news is true, it is definitely surprising, if pleasantly so, but we’ll wait to see if any other U.K. retailers, or even other countries, can confirm this claim. Unusually though, the description on the watch’s store page doesn’t actually state any technical specifications for the device, though that might just be being pedantic.
The device is available for £120 (around $180 USD/$200 AUD), which really isn’t all that bad when you compare it to the Pebble which retails at $150USD and doesn’t have as many features as the SmartWatch 2. I guess we’ll have to see if this is the real deal, but if it is, who would be interested in getting one? Let us know in the comments.
