Splashtop 2 HD released to the Play Store for FREE, Diablo III from the bedroom Anyone

Splashtop has easily been one of the best remote access and viewing apps to hit Android. Setup of the app is as easy as humanly possible and offers quite a bit of functionality. Today Splashtop has released their latest app to the Play Store, Splashtop 2 HD. Designed for tablets running Android 3.1 and up that have a screen resolution of 1280×800. The app brings in pinch-to-zoom functionality too, which is new to the HD scene. While accessing your PC remotely is cool, Splashtop 2 HD does even more than that. It offers users the ability to stream HD movies with audio straight from their PC to their device thanks to Splashtop’s “Bridging Cloud” infrastructure. Not only can you pull HD video across to your device easily, but you can even kick back for a little gaming action with games like Diablo III, Civilization 5 or even your favorite flash games.

“In response to the high demand from Splashtop fans, we are delivering Splashtop 2 HD for Android tablet owners,” noted Mark Lee, Splashtop CEO and co-founder. “With Splahstop 2 HD, users can now turn their Android tablets into a remote desktop to access their computers files, anywhere, anytime.”

Splashtop 2 HD is currently available for FREE in the Play Store, which is pretty darn cool. But it does come with more than one catch. First off, the ‘ Anywhere Access ‘ feature is not part of the free download. You will get all the usual support and operations via a Wi-Fi connection, but to utilize a 3G/4G connection will require a $0.99 a month fee or a $9.99 a year fee. Apparently this is a feature that is free for iPad owners. On a side note though, we see a higher majority of tablet owners only owning Wi-Fi only tablets. Granted you can connect to your device through Hotspots and the likes, but streaming HD content or playing games would surly eat up your data plan.

Secondly, Splashtop mentions that the app is only going to be free for a limited time. Possibly for bug fixes and the likes. They plan to relist the app for $9.99 once the limited time offer is over. We aren’t sure how they plan to do that since Google’s Play Store rules prohibit developers from making an app free and then charging for it at a later date. They could make it happen in one of two ways though, either prompt for an in app purchase of the app or remove the free version and re-add it to the Play Store as paid. Neither option is all that great. If they pull it and relist it then everyone one who is using the current free version won’t be privy to updates. That would be no bueno especially if you paid for the Anywhere Access pack for a year.

It is interesting to note that this app is currently only available for Android tablets, but they make mention that it will be coming to Android phones soon.

I suppose we will just have to wait and see how Splashtop plans to approach the whole situation. Until then, it never hurts to give it a try while it costs nothing to do so. Click or scan the QR code below to install the app to your compatible Android tablet. Once it is installed you will also need to install the Streamer app on your PC. That can be found at www.splashtop.com. Get your account all set up and you should be good to go.

In addition, the app has self-optimizing technology that adapts to the conditions of the network, enabling the user to take full advantage of the bandwidth of a 3G/4G network or Internet connection.
