T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S III OTA out for download, don’t get too Excited

It appears that T-Mobile is pushing an update out to their Samsung Galaxy S III customers. Don’t go getting to excite though. The update is still Android 4.1.1, which is what we saw a few months ago. The only real change is the baseband version and one other noticeable difference.

The baseband version moves from T999UVDLJA to T999UVDLC. T-Mobile lists Security Improvements and Improved User Experience for what the update offers. Doing a little looking around revealed a few things the update actually did. We are seeing that the update fixed issues with an IPv6 bug, so that is good for those of you that need that to be working. The biggest thing that is seriously making waves about the update, is the apparent removal and disabling of the LTE chip inside the device. If you go to Settings > More Settings > Mobile Networks > Network Mode prior to the update you see LTE/GSM/WCDMA. After the update, you only have GSM/WCDMA.

From everything I have read and seen in the past, this isn’t really much of an issue. The S III did have LTE inside, but didn’t have the correct bands for T-Mobile to use it in the first place. So I have seen. Being in an area that is lucky to see 4G a quarter of my day, I am not too worried about the whole thing anyways.

For the Samsung Galaxy S III to support T-Mobile’s LTE service, it would require adding another band to the LTE radio on the phone. A Samsung spokesman confirmed via email that all U.S. units of the Samsaung Galaxy S III are the same across the carriers although the phones are optimized to work on each carrier’s own network.

We will keep watching the chatter and the forum talks about this update and report back any other information we can find.
