Toshiba has disclosed additional details surrounding its tablet endeavors aimed at competing directly with Apple’s iPad. Jeff Barney, general manager of digital products for the US division, suggested the company will offer several devices, referred to as “slates,” with operating systems spanning from Windows 7 to Android, according to a Reuters report.
The Android offering would be the closest device to the iPad, integrating a 10-inch screen and featuring a lower price point. The more expensive Windows-based model is expected to include higher-end features such as dual displays.
“We definitely see a place for the slate, we see there’s a market there,” said Barney. “It’ll be expansive like netbooks, it won’t be cannibalistic.”
The company already offers similar products, including the Journe Touch, in European markets. The device is focused on mobile Internet activities, running a version of Windows CE that does not support third-party apps. The US Android offering will take advantage of the range of content available through the respective Market.
Earlier reports indicate Toshiba’s upcoming slates could arrive sometime late this year or early in 2011.
