User files on Megaupload could be erased as early as February 2nd

The last few weeks of of many of our lives have been interrupted thanks to the Feds. First they swooped in and arrested Kim Dotocm and his associates and effectively shut down Megaupload. Then, to keep themselves out of trouble, Filesonic shut down their file sharing ability. As we progress further through time to the present, we now find out that user files still housed in the Megaupload servers is on the verge of being deleted.

“Now that the United States has completed execution of its search warrants, the United States has no continuing right to access the Mega Servers. The Mega Servers are not in the actual or constructive custody or control of the United States, but remain at the premises controlled by, and currently under the control of, Carpathia and Cogent. Should the defendants wish to obtain independent access to the Mega Servers, or coordinate third-party access to data housed on Mega Servers, that issue must be resolved directly with Cogent or Carpathia. It is our understanding that the hosting companies may begin deleting the contents of the servers beginning as early as February 2, 2012.”

Since the big dogs are in jail and all of their assets have been frozen, they haven’t been able to pay their hosting providers. The companies attorney has been working with prosecutors to get the data saved and keep it from being erased. The estimated total number of users is said to be at least 50 million users world wide. I hope you didn’t have your entire life backed up on the Mega servers.
