Good news Yahoo! Messenger fans, it looks like the IM client will soon be taking the next step by adding video calling to the Yahoo! Messenger application. Yahoo’s VP Mobile, David Katz stated that Yahoo will offer messenger applications that support video calling.
Unlike the Yahoo! Messenger desktop client, the mobile application only allows text messaging and is free in the Android Market. While the app would obviously need to be updated to offer video chat support, we would assume the application would remain free for those capable of the video chat feature. An interesting feature that David Katz noted that others have failed in is this video chat feature will be able to support video between devices and desktops, which is an exciting feature to see come to the game.
Another added bonus is that this video chat could also support calls over 3G instead of the 4G or Wi-Fi networks allowing more user access due to limited 4G coverage areas. While Yahoo! Messenger already has 81 million users, we should that number rapidly increase once mobile support for video calling comes as more people are spending time on their smartphones. We’re also curious to see what Skype and Fring have planned for the future as this is beginning to become the new hotness.
