Wi-Fi dispensing vending machines unwrapped in Japan

It is that time of year when news in our beloved Android world slows to a crawl for about 2 weeks.  It makes for a long day for all us here and for you guys reading fairly pointless stuff. That leaves us with some time to search around for something that is just plain cool.

We all know Japan is light years ahead of anything the U.S. will ever have. We have to many restrictions and too many greedy people.  So when I saw the Wi-Fi vending machine, it made me even more jealous. Tokyo-based beverage company Asahi Soft Drinks took the wraps off their latest line of vending machines that not only offers you a cool refreshing beverage but also free Wi-Fi access. Yes, I did say FREE! You don’t even have to buy a drink to get online. The range is 50m and allows anyone with a device that can pick up Wi-Fi easy access without the need for any password. Granted you are only allotted 30 minutes of time per connection, you can re-connect again and again.

After you are logged in, are directed to their homepage first. It offers the users local store information that is in the vicinity and even any sightseeing spots near by. Asahi plans to drop 1,000 of these machines all over Japan in 2012 with plans to push out a total of 10,000 units over the next five.

Wouldn’t it be nice if there was some super cool vending machine like this sitting down at the mall? Maybe someday the U.S. can get in on some of this action, until then I guess it is Starbucks and McDonald’s for us.
