I know this would be absolutely amazing and certainly squash the complaints towards slow updates. Even if the supposed source is claiming a potential update release for November or December this year. It gets better though. The tipster is also putting his good foot forward and claims that the Galaxy S3, Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 2 and the unannounced, but pending, Galaxy Note 3 will all see Key Lime Pie, Android 5.0.
None of this information is concrete of course, but that doesn’t mean that it is improbable. Both the Galaxy S3 and Note 2 have been waiting for an update to Android 4.2.2 for some time now. There was a leaked test build put out back in June for the European versions, but I haven’t seen anything beyond that personally. I didn’t expect to see any news about an Android 4.2.2 update for either device until at least 6 months after the Galaxy S4 was launched. If they update the Galaxy S3, then they need to update the Note 2. With the Galaxy Note 3 right around the corner Samsung can’t push an update out that would be the same OS version as the new device. Simple business thinking right there. Other rumors have pointed to Google releasing Android 4.3 in October, which would give Samsung time to update, at least some, of their current flagship devices in the November/December timeframe. Especially since we are sure they already have a build of it in testing thanks to their close partnership and ties with Google.
Keep in mind that Google has yet to officially announce or talk about Android 4.3 or Android 5.0. Although there has been plenty of evidence and chatter about the upcoming Android 4.3 in the last few months.
With all the talks that still center around fragmentation and lack of manufacturer and carrier updates, a move like this would put Samsung at the head of the pack. Dare I say, more Apple like? If Samsung can pull off updates to a select few of the flagship devices that have helped catapult them to riches, then I see no reason for people to not jump on the bandwagon. It won’t happen overnight sadly and let’s not forget that the carriers in the U.S. still have the final feet dragging say in the matter. I have high hopes on this rumor for now.
