Not since the HTC 8X have we seen a HTC smartphone running a Windows operating system, however if rumours regarding private talks between Microsoft and HTC are to be believed, we could potentially be seeing Windows on a HTC handset in the near future. Most interesting about this rumour is that Microsoft isn’t asking for Windows to be the primary operating system on a potential phone, rather it’s asking if Windows can be added as a “second option”. Whether this implies that both Android and Windows would be offered at the same time in a dual-boot format or if any given smartphone would have the option of being either Android or Windows remains to be seen, but it is definitely an interesting prospect.
This is obviously a desperate move by Microsoft to save its failing mobile platform, particularly as it is rumoured to be offering to HTC the licencing for its Windows operating system for “little or no cost”. Considering that Windows phones currently only possess 3.7% of the smartphone market and the state that HTC’s finances are currently in, a deal like this might not work out spectacularly, however, seeing as this would be the first time two major operating systems collaborated openly, it could open new avenues for the smartphone industry to develop.
