The HTC One Max is almost upon us, expected to be announced on October 15, but that hasn’t stopped it adding a leaked Instagram photo and specifications list to its long trail of leaks. While most of the features of the HTC One Max are rather ho-hum, such as its Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor clocked at 1.7GHz and 2GB RAM, the feature that has drawn the most ire is the fingerprint scanner that has been spotted adorning the rear of the phablet. Many of us had assumed that it would be used like the iPhone 5S’s fingerprint scanner, used simply for security. While that might still be true, some leaked instructional pictures suggest that the HTC One Max fingerprint scanner could be used to much greater effect.
If the picture and source is to be believed, HTC may be programming the One Max to register shortcuts for each unique fingerprint, i.e. to tie the each of your ten fingerprints to different apps or functions on your phone. Additionally, the source notes that the scanner has the ability to register swipe gestures, possibly opening up even more available functions to utilize, though it’s been suggested this might actually pertain to rudimentary navigation/trackpad functionality.
This is definitely very interesting information, if true, as it would give the One Max its differentiating feature from the other phablets. And while the hardware on the inside may not impress the tech community, the fingerprint scanner might have enough interest, thanks to the iPhone 5S, to boost sales of the HTC One Max. I am still a bit adamant as to how accurate the fingerprint scanner is and if it will actually be able to differentiate your different fingers with 100%, or near 100%, accuracy, but I guess only time will tell.
