Motorola Announces Project Ara that will Give Us Modular Smartphones

We no doubt, remember that video that came out which featured “Phonebloks”. It was a radical idea that would give the user complete control on just replacing certain parts of the phone, instead of the entire device. We all kind of laughed, and said, “yes that’s cool,” but then it was soon long forgotten. Motorola does not want us to forget.

Project Ara has a similar concept to Phonebloks, but they are calling the initial body of the phones “endos’. This is short for endoskeleton, and then Moto wants to give us the ability to replace the modules, like a keyboard or battery,  just like what we saw in the Phonbloks demonstration. Here is a little bit of what Motorola had to say about it:

The design for Project Ara consists of what we call an endoskeleton (endo) and modules.  The endo is the structural frame that holds all the modules in place. A module can be anything, from a new application processor to a new display or keyboard, an extra battery, a pulse oximeter–or something not yet thought of!

Motorola is hoping to get developers on board with Project Ara, by giving them a module kit sometime this winter. No word yet on when they would like to launch these phones, but it probably will not be for while still. Let us know what you think about Project Ara.
