We all love tablets for the larger screen experience, whether that is for games, web browsing, document editing, etc. It is down to personal preference, but sometimes a tablet just isn’t big enough, or you want to share what you’re doing without crowding around a 7†screen.
This is the niche filled by HDMI mirroring, and the Analogix SlimPort SP1003 HDMI Adapter does this well. The device itself is small and lightweight, easy to carry, even with your tablet, and conveniently packs a microUSB port for charging at the same time.
Operation is pretty much as simple as it gets. You plug the microUSB connector into your device, plug a HDMI cable into the other side from your TV, and away you go. Pictures are sharp and crisp, no blur or artifacts, and it can keep pace even with a lot of on screen action.
I tried out the Analogix Slimport SP1003 connected to a 40″ Toshiba HDTV from a 2013 Nexus 7, and it was an amazing experience. Playing a few rounds of Shadowgun DeadZone and Dead Trigger 2 on a huge screen is pretty cool.
Currently the device is listed as compatible with the Nexus 4, 5, & 7 (2013 model) and the LG G2, though it should be compatible with any device supporting HDMI over MicroUSB. SlimPort is based on the open standard Display Port, combined with HDMI and packaged for mobile devices. As it is an open standard, it is royalty free, unlike MHL, and should be easier for OEMs to adopt.
My only gripe is the inclusion of a charging port. Even using the supplied charger, if you are watching a film or playing game whilst mirroring and charging, this will extend the time you can play or watch, but you will end up with a very hot device, which can potentially be very damaging. Charging is also significantly slower this way, you would be better off disconnecting the Analogix Slimport SP1003, and charging your phone from an AC charger.
In many ways the Analogix Slimport SP1003 is a very useful accessory, decently priced, and perfect for using your device on a big screen.
