Despite all the criticisms and marketing flops, it looks like OnePlus has come out of 2014 a winner. Reporting that it has sold almost one million OnePlus One handsets, co-founder Carl Pei reflected on what was a surprising year for his fledgling start-up.
“We basically weren’t prepared for what happened. We thought that all our demand would be in China the first year,” Pei says.
The OnePlus One was so popular in the U.S. that demand famously outpaced supply, a fact that is probably not lost on anyone familiar with Android news. You almost wonder if OnePlus would have sold even more devices had it scrapped its invite system, but its performance in the last year is probably more than enough encouraging given the massive growth of it and other Chinese manufacturers who are starting to make waves in global markets.
Pei also confirmed that OnePlus is currently working on a follow-up to the OnePlus One as well as a separate device that Pei says is “going to be a phone catering to a different type of audience. Perhaps for those who appreciate design over specs.” Whatever that means, we hope it’ll be dirt cheap but with the great specs we’ve come to expect from OnePlus devices.
