Not that long ago I reviewed the Kingston MobileLite Wireless drive for you guys. The drive is more so an access point for you to connect a variety of storage solutions too, like external hard drives, thumb drives, SD cards and such. It works quite well. Most of my gripes came from the app. While it was a much more pleasant experience than the previous versions of the app, it still had a long way to go. Today Kingston is taking the first steps to do just that with a fairly fantastic update to the MobileLite app.
The change log for what is new, according to the Play Store is rather lacking. Kingston added support for the app to be compatible with Android 5.0 and support for multi-file selection. While both are good things to have, it I more so the night and day difference in the apps design that really brings it up to speed to todays services. The whole UI is dramatically more Material Design influenced. The way the files, videos, images and music display is light years better than it ever was.
While not perfect, it is a solid start to a complete revamp. I can see where there will be some frustration points that will need to be explained. On the previous app you would tap, say a movie file, and then it would prompt you to choose the app you wanted to use. With the more recent update, that option is removed entirely and the video will begin to play through the MobileLite app. That will be bothersome if you prefer a different video player or used it to cast content to your TV via AllCast. The ability to choose where it gets played or opened is not lost though. Instead you will need to tap on the three dot overflow menu on the particular file, then tap on the share arrow. From there you can select Open and choose your program accordingly.
You will also see that Kingston seemed to flub up the actions titles next to the menu items. Icons alone work just fine if you know what they are. In this case you have copy, share, delete and info.
I imagine there will be another update coming soon to solve that, and other potential things users report. If you happen to have the app, grab the update and check it out. It is pretty awesome.
