The Nexus 6 is a great, but flawed, device. It had every hallmark of being a standout, but lack of availability has relegated it to the realm of guilty pleasures. For Google, it appears that the Nexus 6 filled a logical hole in its Nexus device line-up, perching its new ‘phablet’ device squarely between the Nexus 5 smartphone and Nexus 7 tablet. The nomenclature for the Nexus devices has been pretty logical so far, however it’s come up against a wall with the Nexus 6 being released, with almost every number (except 8) being occupied. Which got us thinking:Â what is the next Nexus smartphone going to be named?
Of course, this isn’t the first time that Google has been in this position: the Nexus 7 already has two iterations that are named the same, except that there is a year tacked onto the end of its name i.e. Nexus 7 2012 and Nexus 7 2013. This is definitely the most likely outcome if Google were to release a new smartphone in the 5-inch to 6-inch range, but we like to think because those devices are so similar (and manufactured by the same company, Asus), they named it that way to minimize any confusion.
Which leaves us with what else could Google call their new smartphones? We’ve love to hear your suggestions in the comments below.
