LG Has 10 More Smartphones up Their Sleeves… Really?

The Dow Jones Newswire is reporting that LG, the 3rd largest handset manufacturer in the world  (which only holds 1.2 percent of the smartphone category) is releasing 10 more smartphones before the end of the year.  You may remember earlier this year that LG said they would roll out 20 new smartphones with a majority of them being Android devices. So far, we’ve only seen the LG Ally, a mid-range qwerty slider on Verizon Wireless.

Chang Ma, LG’s Vice President of Marketing for their handset division, told Dow Jones that the majority of the handsets would be on the Android platform with a couple being Windows Mobile.  Ma said that LG has 120 operators committed to its Optimus line, which is a line of lower end Android devices to help customers make the segue from feature phones to the platform.  Ma didn’t say whether any of those 120 carriers were US based. However LG does have a relationship with all of the US Carriers.

LG also revealed that it would be using NVIDIA’s dual-core tegra chipset instead of Qualcomm’s Snap Dragon or Samsung’s Hummingbird.

With 10 smartphones debuting in the next 4 and a half months LG has a lot of work to do. Hopefully we will see some of the Optimus line in the US.
