App Review: Touch Racing Nitro [Video]

Touch Racing Nitro is a new Android racing game released just earlier this month with the best thing about the game being exactly what it should be, the gameplay. The controls take a little getting used to but the two thumb method of just touching where you want the car to go works really well and and most importantly, is enjoyable. You’ll have to pay attention to each car’s turning radius and handling and be careful not to just blaze at full speed around the track as it’s all too easy to get trapped and lose time having to reset back onto the track, although you can offset some of that time by throwing down a nitro boost, but the AI often does the same.

There are 18 tracks which get unlocked as you complete the three different cups and each cup has a trio of difficulties that go towards unlocking three different sets of four cars, giving twelve vehicles in all. Each class of vehicle has its own unique feel but the difference between cars is overshadowed by the difference between the tracks. Each track might be small but the jumps, chicanes and obstacles compacted by the mediocre view distance means that it’ll take a few practice runs on each track before you become proficient and you’ll really need that practice if you want to take on the tougher difficulty levels.

With such great features it’s a pity that the game should be let down by such small obstacles. For instance, there’s no progress saving within a tournament, this means that should you want to complete a full season of six races you’ll have to set some time aside. There’s also no way of restarting a race inside a tournament should you find yourself losing, although this does add some extra pressure that is missing from games that give you simple mulligans. It’s also unfortunate that the games is missing the ghost mode that is in the iPhone version, although this could be added in future versions of Open Feint.

Touch Racing Nitro is a great overhead racer that’s unfortunately missing some of the simple features that you’d expect for the price. But the driving is a lot of fun and that’s truly the most important thing.

Touch Racing Nitro is created by Bravo Game Studios and costs 3 Euros (a little over $4).
