For all of you movie lovers out there, Google Inc. is rumored to be currently in talks with Miramax Films to get the license for digital rights. As Netflix, Hulu and Apple are working with their own streaming media projects, Google may be trying to build YouTube up accordingly to battle the competition.
Miramax Films currently holds the rights to over 700 films including titles like Pulp Fiction, The Crow and Trainspotting and if Google could get rights to all or any of these titles, YouTube would definitely sit high among the competition.
A spokesman from YouTube declined to comment on reports that YouTube has had discussions with the holding company that is set to complete its $660 million acquisition of Miramax from Walt Disney Company in a few weeks. Â He did however state that Disney remains a valuable partner with YouTube and that Google was discussing different matters.
So, what does this mean for Android? If Google were to get the license for digital rights for any or all of these titles from Miramax, we soon could be watching them via the YouTube application that is available in the Android Market, all speculation of course. With YouTube’s current rental service already established, this Miramax deal could expand the available titles offering movies to a much larger audience and we would hope that Google would expand this rental service to Android handsets in the future.
