Just yesterday we heard from Cole Brodman, T-Mobile’s CMO. He made a statement that the Android 2.2 Froyo update for the T-Mobile Vibrant was coming “very soon”. Coming from a guy in his position, and not from Samsung, gave me a little more hope then usual. According to PCMag, the update is supposed to start trickling out of the T-Mobile system and start showing up on users devices.
All I can say is, “It’s about time.” I have no doubt that a lot of the resent up-roar from consumers prompted this to happen as fast as it did. As with any news of an OTA, there are is still a bit of hesitation from us. Saying and doing go a long way. With the sheer number of devices registered to the network, the process is sure to take a few weeks.
Now the question that needs to be answered is, what took so long. Brodman had an answer for that, “It was a quality control and timing issue. The biggest challenge is integration and customization.” Brodman continues on to say that smartphone users expecting frequent updates is “new to us and we’re going to have to step up and change the way we do things.” This is promising news. Maybe after they say the stats rolling around putting them at the bottom of the update chain has sparked some interest. After all, how you can call your selves the ‘most highly regarded service company’, if you can’t get a simple update out to your devices.
T-Mobile is also looking at ways to make the process work more efficiently. As of right now they are hoping t be able to push updates out to support devices in 3-5 months of Google releasing it to the public. They want to give themselves a little cushion due to complications that arise from manufacturer skins and T-Mobile custom applications, such as Wi-Fi calling. Now if we can just get both of them to lay off the custom garbage and just go true Android, the world would be a happier place.
We have waited this long for it to come. Whats a few days of waiting for your OTA at this point?. I will ultimately believe it when I see it. If you have received the OTA, please let us know. Until I see people reporting about it actually on their device, I file this as a rumor.
As far as the rest of the poor Galaxy S owners out there on other carriers, US Cellular reported March as their update time frame. Verizon, AT&T and sprint have yet to make an announcement of any kind. Hopefully you will see your dose of Froyo soon though.
UPDATE: Looks like Samsung Kies Mini is the method for update. At least for right now. Still unsure if this will be the only method available. If anyone out there has seen an OTA please let us know.
