Even though it is technically my job to know everything there is to know about every device that is coming or is out, it is nearly impossible. Add in the fact that I am more of a Samsung fan since my Vibrant purchase, make it even harder for me to get to excited for another manufacturers device. That doesn’t mean I don’t try to bring you news on everything else, I know I have failed when it comes to the T-Mobile HTC Amaze 4G. With the device scheduled to launch in about 2 weeks, I thought I should give a little ditty about the device for everyone that is interested in this monster.
The HTC Amaze 4G was previously known as the HTC Ruby when the leaks of the device were flying around the net. You can expect to find a whole slew of goodies packed inside this device. With advanced camera performance from an 8 megapixel camera, 1080p video, backside illuminated sensor for low-light performance, zero shutter lag and dual-led flash, sure makes this an easy replacement for your digital camera needs. Additional camera functions include dedicated side buttons for both your camera and video capture.
You can expect to see all your Android goodness displayed on a 4.3″ qHD Super LCD screen at a resolution of 540 x 960, so I have read, and HTC Sense 3.5 U.I overlay. Internally you are looking at a Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 dual-core chip at 1.5 GHz and NFC support ready.
What is semi surprising is this device will launch with Android 2.3.4, which puts it one small version behind the Galaxy S II. Since HTC seems to be better at releasing updates, it shouldn’t take long to move it forward, as long as T-Mobile allows it.
If I were a die-hard HTC owner then this device is looking great. With a smaller screen, slightly out dated OS version and same processor as the Galaxy S II, I wouldn’t pick this up. HTC does make some great hardware though. We haven’t had any hands on time with either device side by side so I can’t comment on-screen quality between the two. If the screen on the Amaze provides better clarity, which it will, then this might be the better choice. I am not personally sold on it though.
If you are looking towards snagging this when it drops on Oct 12th, expect to pay a little bit more. The Amaze will be coming in at $259.99 after a $50 mail in rebate. So for $30 more than a Galaxy S II you can be packing around the Amaze 4G instead.
