I am sure you all have a similar story in your past. That one bill that popped up out of no where that will drain your savings or ruin your credit. As much as we all hate to have any Government agency step in and set new standards, someone had to do something. The FCC has stepped in and are now requiring all four of the major U.S. Carriers – Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint – to start protecting customers from themselves. The new policy will go into effect no later than October 17th, 2012, and will make them be required to send out alerts when you are over your minutes, data text messages and even international roaming. The FCC is working on new regulations that will force the smaller carriers to follow similar policies.
The FCC is also setting up some “strict consequences” for any of the carriers that fail to keep an unwitting customer from over stepping their accounts.
The sad thing is, this is something that must be done. I guesstimate that at least 80% of Americans aren’t capable of taking care of themselves or their phone usage. Seriously, is it that difficult to check your account online, via your short codes or even with an app that can be found in the market for free? Have we as a whole become so irresponsible that we need the company that provides us a service to monitor our use too? Although this will be a benefit for a high majority of the nation, I still can’t help but wonder what is happening to our freedoms and our sense of responsibility.
What is your opinion? Have you been burned by an out of control phone bill that you knew was your fault? Do you call asking for credits and demanding resolution?
