We have a sneaking suspicion that we will be getting a lot of these kinds of announcements over the next few weeks. With an OS update that is aimed specifically at closing the gap between tablets and phones, any device that is left behind will only cause bad press. Especially any device that has a large following or has been released in the last 6 to 8 months. One of the leading factors in a successful update plan (in my opinion) are the manufacturers hands. I can easily see the Wi-Fi only
XOOM getting an update long before the Verizon branded version. To many hoops and things the carrier will want to tweak. I have a feeling a lot of the Wi-Fi only tablets on the market ill get updates long before the carrier branded versions. The price you have to pay for discount and carrier data I suppose.
At least we have some hope for the XOOM no matter which version you have. According to a support forum moderator for Motorola the XOOM will be getting an ICS Android 4.0 update. No time frame was mentioned or which version would be getting it first. Since Motorola/Verizon did state the Droid RAZR would be getting it in early 2012, we can only assume that they are going to try to push updates out fairly fast to appease the nation. I think that any Manufacturer will have a lot more success focusing on updating as many current devices as they can. Then they can focus on new tech like quad-cores, NFC, Cameras, Camcorders and GPU’s. If they can do that, then we will start to see some real device innovations.
