100 million dollars down the drain by Apple just on patent disputes with HTC

Day in and day out we hear about some new and absurd patent suit made by Apple. Be it a design element, similar looking and acting software or any other number of things they can dream up. According to Newsweek’s well-sourced Dan Lyons, the first round of disputes Apple filed against HTC has reportedly cost them 100 million dollars with seemingly very little to show for the expenses. Apple has won some and lost some, but nothing substantial has been produced yet. Getting a few HTC devices banned from shipping temporarily is hardly crippling. HTC has already implemented a simple work around to solve the supposed patent infringement and all should be well again soon.

That doesn’t mean Apple has any plans to slow down or stop spending. We fully expect them to drop another 100 million to fight HTC and who knows how much more has already been spent against Samsung, Motorola and others. Seems to me the money could be spent on better things, like building facilities in the states to provide jobs, or research and development of something new. That is just me though.

I would love to see an official report from Apple, HTC, Samsung and any others that get caught up in these law suites. I think it would be very interesting to see how much money is being tossed around to the lawyers and legal teams.
