Review: EZBoost portable mobile charger and Go Green Batteries

We all know that CES is the ultimate venue for new products launches and announcements. Not just by the big boys of the CE industry, but also the newly created and start-ups looking to break into the electronics industry. Some of the things we saw while in attendance shocked and amazed. Other things were so far out there that a practicable application of it just didn’t fit into our brain. Then you run into products and companies that are trying to do something right.

PerfPower is a name you may or may not have heard of before. I think you will agree that their product is pretty unique, but want makes PerfPower stand out of the crowd is their business ethics. Ya, some companies still have business ethics believe it or not. One of the two products you will see in this article is called EZBoost. I am sure you can already figure out that it will be yet another one of the many portable power backups that we viewed and got our hands on this year. You would be correct. The EZboost is a little bit different though. Instead of housing a rechargeable Li-Ion battery, this one is powered by 6 AA batteries. There are other backup chargers that use regular batteries instead a Li-Ion battery. Most of them use 2 or 3 AA and can’t hardly power up anything. By using 6 AA’s EZBoost is able to push out 16 watts of power and charge up most standard smartphones twice. The number of charges you get will depend on the device, battery size and type. For general emergency’s it will help you in a pinch without worry.

The EZBoost is pretty slim and compact, it is only slightly larger than my Galaxy S and about double the thickness. The casing is a soft grip rubberized material that feels nice. Located on the front of the device is a green light to let you know if it is on or off. On the right hand side you will find a switch to turn it on or off as well. Located at the top is your standard USB port. In the box you receive a short USB to micro USB cable intended for Blackberry’s but works for any device with a micro USB plug. You will also find 6 AA Go Green batteries included. Yes, I said a set of batteries ARE included. As an added bonus, they also tossed in a free 6-month subscription to Total Defense Mobile Security for and Anti-Virus Plus for your PC.

The second product that is part of the same one is the Go Green batteries. There is one reason why these need to be mentioned with the EZBoost. The recycling program incorporate with the batteries. You earn points based on the battery type, which is determined by a code on each pack of batteries. You create a free account and put in the codes. After you reach 75 points they offer you a printable shipping label to ship off the dead batteries for recycling. No extra charge or hassle. Makes doing your part to Go Green a little easier. You can take a closure look at the program at irecycled.com

Along with a killer recycling program, the batteries themselves are pretty inexpensive. a 4 pack of AA’s will run you 2.99. They have packs for AA, AAA, 9-v, C and D.

The Yay’s

  • Small and compact
  • Great for emergency charging
  • 6 Batteries included
  • 6-month security subscription
  • Free recycling program
  • Charged my phone up as advertised

The Nay’s

  • Requires 6 AA batteries
  • No remaining battery life indicator
  • Larger packs of Go Green batteries not available yet
Over all It is a great product. Even though I listed the battery requirement as a negative, it could be considered a positive. When camping and hiking I always have an ample supply of batteries for flashlights and other various items. So the EZBoost could be a life saver if my rechargeable back ups die. The EZBoost isn’t designed for everyday use either. It is designed to be loaded with batteries and tucked away in a glove box or kitchen drawer. It could be a daily use product if you already have a set of rechargeable batteries in your home that you can charge again later though.

Want to buy?

Sure you do. Anything affordable that could come in handy and is compatible with nearly any electronic device you own is a good bet. You can pick the EZBoost up a variety of retailers across the US, like some Fry’s Electronics. If you are a bit more of an online shopper, you can snag one via Amazon below for only $19.95. Don’t forget to recycle.
