Qualcomm more interested in perfecting dual-core before quad-core Production

We already have Tegra 3 quad-cores running around in the wild. There are Texas Instrument ones coming close, Intel has one and Samsung is about to unveil their new Exynos quad-core chip. What about the other seemingly huge chip manufacturer, Qualcomm? Where is their hyped APQ8064 2.5GHz quad-core processor? Don’t expect to see it in any prototype devices at MWC. Instead of pushing forward and jumping to the next chip in development, Qualcomm is focusing its efforts on what they already have.

They are looking to perfect their dual-core chips before moving forward. Judging from some of the benchmark scores we have seen over the last few weeks, they are doing a great job of it too. Take a look at the scores produced by the latest S4 dual-core chip they are working with.

It makes sense to work with a product you already have, make it faster, more efficient and be able to handle more. Jumping ship on a great product before it has reached its peak performance is a little premature. Dual-core processors are plenty fast enough as is for most people and if Qualcomm can make their current chip set out perform a quad-core chip, more power to them.

On the other side of the coin, all the big boys are migrating to quad-core. There is something spectacularly amazing about seeing that listed on the side of your devices box, if for no other reason then to say you have it. With Qualcomm focusing its efforts on dual-core and hopping on the train for quad-core, it could hurt them in the long run. The consumers want the next big thing and if it isn’t from Qualcomm they are likely to jump to Nvidia or Samsung to get it. Qualcomm has every intention of putting a quad-core chip to market, but they don’t plan to do so till Q4. Is that too little too late? Hopefully not.
