Rumors of digital cameras sporting Android as the underlying OS have been around for a while. Polaroid was working on one that we saw at CES, but haven”t seen since. The more recent rumor came in with talks of a new
Nikon Coolpix camera sporting a touchscreen with Android. We picked up the story a little while ago when
it was discovered in a Indonesian Communication Agency filling. It seemed pretty legit that Nikon was indeed building an Android based Coolpix device. Now we catch wind of some leaked press images of the actual device.
While they are only images and not accompanied by any sort of spec sheet, price or launch date, we can still get a little more information from them. Such as a 12X Wide Optical Zoom ED VR in HD and a stock 4.5-54.0mm lens. Not to mention what looks like
Android 2.3 running on the back of what we assume is a 3.5-inch OLED touch screen. Although the small amount of icons on the screen don’t offer up any Google Apps, but the filing suggested otherwise.
We still beg to wonder though if an Android operating system on what is usually a fairly inexpensive camera model will be a big impact. Will Nikon have enough power inside the camera to use it for more than just photos and sharing? If you are interested in knowing more about this little camera we might not have to wait much longer. Nikon Rumors seems to believe that it will be announced on or around August 22nd.
