[Video] LG releases new Optimus G video highlighting the 13MP Camera
LG has been traveling down a rather rocky road into the Android scene ever since it jumped on board. They were one of the last major manufacturers to start producing Android devices, which put them at a slight disadvantage over many other OEM’s like Samsung, Motorola and HTC. LG put out a few devices that had some nice features and looked pretty great, but something always detracted them from making a strong global presence. Even with the lackluster line up currently available from LG, they are doing everything they can to make their next flgaship device really standout.
We are of course talking about the LG Optimus G. LG officially announced the device about two weeks ago, right after Qualcomm pushed out a press statement that they were supplying LG with the new S4 Pro quad-core chip at 1.5GHz with full LTE support. Lock that in with 2GB of RAM, a 4.7-inch 1280 x 760 True HD IPS+ LCD display, a 2100 mAh battery and an impressive labeling of a 13MP camera. It all sounds pretty amazing. Even the inclusion of some new software that will offer up dual screen capabilities sounds pretty great.
LG has released another video via their YouTube channel where they spend a little time going over some of the new tech in the 13MP camera. Like with the battery, screen and many other aspects of the Optimus G, The camera was designed in-house by LG Innotek. According to the video they were able to create the thinnest camera module and bring the resolution up. That helps keep the overall thickness of the device down. For the camera tech geeks out there, LG states it has a 1.1 microns pixel size on a 1/3″ sensor size. Which, according to AndroidAuthority, lower than those found on the Galaxy S III and iPhone 4S. The teardown diagram that shows off its part make mention of a low power / slim VCM too.
LG also goes through a little bit of the camera software in the video. They talk about something they call Time Machine Camera. Which looks like a continuous shoot mode in a way where you can see a bunch of images during a photo. The way they show it though, it looks like the device will take a series of photos while the camera app is open and allow you to view previous images after you take the shot. Not really sure how that works out, but it looks cool in the video. Another function they talk about is voice-activate shooting and smart shutter. The voice-activated shooting would cub the need for setting u a delay on a photo and allow you to speak to the device to take the shot when you are ready. This would have come in handy for me on the last camping trip where I was trying to take a couple of pictures of me hiking alone.
LG has some serious catching up to do if they plan to grab some market share back from Samsung though. The Galaxy S III is already dominating global sales and we have no doubt that the Note II will snag a huge chunk of sales also. LG is doing a pretty darn good job of putting out bits of specific information to help keep us interested in the device. We all know that specs in writing don’t always give us a an accurate picture of what a device can really do. While the Optimus G is slim, has a great display and what sounds like a fantastic camera, nothing beats seeing it up close and personal. We really do hope for the best from LG. THey have certainly put a lot of time, effort and technology into the G, let’s hope that it pans out to be as amazing in person as it sounds on paper.

When Samsung brought their first few Android devices to market, they were horrible, absolute garbage. Now they are the leader in the Android device sales. We think LG has a real chance with the Optimus G, but much of that will ride on where the device gets released. If it never makes it across the ocean, or makes it a year later, that will be sad.
