Acer making more money with Chromebooks than Windows 8

Acer looks to be getting back in the green thanks to their adoption of Google’s Chrome OS and the release of their Chromebook back in November. The company had been reporting annual losses for the last two years. Since the launch of the Acer Chromebook in the U.S., it has claimed 5 to 10 percent of Acer’s U.S. shipments.

“Windows 8 itself is still not successful,” said Wong, whose company posted a 28 percent drop in fourth-quarter shipments from a year earlier. “The whole market didn’t come back to growth after the Windows 8 launch, that’s a simple way to judge if it is successful or not.”

It isn’t hard to see why people have taken a new fancy to Acer. The Acer C7 Chromebook, which can be purchased directly through the Google Play Store, offers quite the bang for its buck. Running $199.99 per unit and sports an 11.6-inch screen, dual-core processor, 2 GB of RAM and a 320 GB hard drive. It weighs in at only 3 pounds and is just over an inch thick. I know I have considered picking one or two up for my family since all they want is an internet based netbook.
