Strike one up for Android. The Amazon Kindle Fire has toppled the iPad and has taken the number one spot on BestBuy.com’s website as the most purchased tablet. Do I find this surprising? Not exactly. With the device’s $199 price tag, we all knew Amazon would have no trouble convincing customers to pick one of these up, especially with the device’s right-before-Christmas release date. For the past few weeks, the tablet has already dominated sales on Amazon.com, and now things are starting to heat up elsewhere.
Of course, I’m sure Black Friday played its part in making the Fire take the top of the charts, but how long will its reign last? Everybody and their brother has been abuzz about the ASUS Transformer Prime lately (though they aren’t gonna be snagging one of these up for anywhere near as cheap as the Kindle Fire), and there are still other devices out there for the Fire to compete with. Let’s not forget about Barnes & Noble and their recently released Nook Tablet, which also features an affordable price tag. It’s a bit more expensive than the KF at $249, but it’s still what I’d like to consider an affordable device, and has definitely provided a spike to B&N’s sales.
For now, I salute the Amazon Kindle Fire for its achievements, especially any that involve the dethroning of an Apple product. Enjoy that top spot, and stop doing silly things like pushing out OTA’s that attempt to take our root privileges away, and you might be able hold it down (for a while).
