Golf as a casual sport has always been a good time waster and perhaps that’s what makes it an ideal game for a portable device: start a tournament, get in a few rounds and pick it up again later. Gameloft’s Let’s Golf gives you a trio of 18 hole courses including Fiji, England and the USA as well as a nine hole course in Scotland to explore. The game also includes some unlockables for those needing some sense of progression.
Some courses present you with great scenery
As a single player you can either either free play or enter a tournament where you’ll compete against AI golfers. You won’t actually see these phantom golfers play, but instead you will be attempting to beat their scorecard after each hole. Difficulty levels can be adjusted which will increase your distance from the hole, wind speed and the competence of the competition to your liking. Should you come out on top you will unlock clothing hair or balls for your available characters, which will effect their already unique statistics. You can also take your dolled up character into a multiplayer game either on the same device or across local wireless.
Gee I hope I have shoes to match this.
Unlocking courses, characters and pretty pink dresses is all well and good but as with real golf, it’s all in the swing. Fortunately Let’s Golf has a pair of options: the usual double tap for power then hook/slice, or an advanced swipe option where you pull back and around for power. Both these controls work well although the advanced mode can seem a little over sensitive and imprecise. While you’re knocking the ball around, you’ll be treated to some varied environments and while not all are filled with eye candy, they each offer their own challenges and are enjoyable to play.
Let’s Golf doesn’t come across as a serious golf game, with its cranially endowed characters, chirpy speech and repetitive music that gives off more than a little of a Wii Sports vibe, but it is a lot of fun and you certainly are challenged in many of the ways a serious golf game would. If anything I would have liked to see some extra mini-game modes thrown in since the game has already taken this route although this is a rather minor nit to pick for a game that does what it does so well.
