Back-up OS being created by Huawei, just in case Android says “No more open source for you”

This little bit of news is almost a bit ridiculous to even report on. We have all at least heard of Huawei, they make some unbranded entry to mid-range devices that are primarily large sellers overseas, with a few popping up here in the states. The more recent devices from Huawei are pretty nice. They look good and have comparable specs to some of the other devices in their category. The Android OS is their go to software over the last two years, and has served them well. Now a statement released by Huawei CEO Wan Biao points to a back-up plan already in the works, just in case they get booted by Google.

“We’re also devoting resources into coming up with a phone operating system based on our current platform in case other companies won’t let us use their system one day.”

More so scared that Google might deny them access to the open source platform in the future due to their partnership in the Open Handset Alliance. This was a cause for concern with Acer recently as well. Google big concern is the forks that get created by companies that think they can do better and sell devices that cause compatibility issues with applications. We can easily see how that would have an adverse effect on the Android ecosystem.

But, isn’t Amazon doing the same thing in a way? Sort of we suppose. They do have their own forked version of Android based OS on their tablets. Where Amazon differs though is the fact that devs can submit application to the Amazon App Store. Which is still all Android based and run just fine. So technically, they just have a different look and feel but are still Android.

It all really comes down to the consumers. “Whatever consumers like, we’ll develop,” said Biao. If people want Android they will give them Android, if people want Windows phones, they will give them windows phones. If Huawei creates an alternative OS that appeals to the masses and gains them sales and popularity and puts a wedge between themselves, Google and Microsoft, then that’s what they will do, as long as it makes money. Personally, I don’t see the need for any more mobile OS systems out there in the wild. We will see what Huawei has in the works though, they have no plans to actually release anything, they are just building for now.
