I promised you more information about the Android phones I had the fortune to see and play with from Commtiva, and here it is.

So who are Commtiva you ask?

Commtiva is relative newcomer to the Android phone market and as such has done an incredible job at producing some awesome phones.

My initial reaction as I entered the small business park was not one of “wow, look at this technology center” and no clue that an Cellular Solutions, and particular, an Android development company would be located in somewhere in the midst of all these office spaces.

Working for technology companies myself, in the past, it came as no surprise, for a technology driven company, to find a Pool table in the middle of the office and a table full of wires and components which where obviously someone’s technical play desk.  There was also a display of different types of cellular technology related to other ventures the company is and has been involved with.

I know…”Get on with it” I hear you say!….”We want the phones”…..So here is a small selection of the phones they had on location and as much information as I’m allowed to share to you guys.

I would describe the phones as being split into 3 distinct categories; Entry level, Mid level and High level.  Every phone has an nickname that probably won’t be the final names used when the products hit the streets.

There where 8 phones that I was lucky enough to get my hands on, some of them fully working and others just prototypes that did function at the time of my visit.  Another round of working samples are due very soon and I have been invited back to see them in action.  It is very hard to judge the quality of the phones when the mock-ups really where just non working shells.  They did have thrown in and almost hand crafted circuit boards but no batteries and the outer shells where very flimsy and unfinished, as you would expect from mock-ups.

The story was different for the working models and gave a much better impression for the final quality of the phones.  If they continue to build to these standards then these will be very nice phones once they come to market.

So now all my waffling is over, here are the phones and specification starting with the Entry Level phones first:

ARAMON (Entry Level / Non Working Mock Up)

The ARMAON is a cool looking slider phone with full qwerty keyboard that when closed is a small sleek square that slides easily in any pocket or hand bag. The screen is QVGA non touch sensitive, which from my understanding, is not currently supported in Android 1.5 but will be supported in Donut.

You will probably take one look at this photo, rub your eye and then laugh.  Yes, that is Windows Mobile your seeing on the screen.  The they first started developing cell phones, Android was not available so there intention was to build Windows mobile phones.  All the phones are now Android but we didn’t have a photo available showing Android running on this phone.  Trust me, this was one of the phones that was working and it was running Android.
