First camera modules for Project Ara revealed by Toshiba

Project Ara, Google’s fancy little modular phone of the future, keeps gaining more and more momentum as time progresses. The basic principles behind the device involves making all your phones components interchangeable. Think of it like a desktop PC of sorts. Want better photos, then just buy a higher resolution camera module. Basically allowing you to take a base product and upgrade the components you want rather than having to buy a whole new phone all the time for that one special something extra. We know Project Ara is slated to make its debut in Puerto Rico later this year and that means we should start seeing a plethora of modules from various manufactures. Now we get our first taste at a set of modules from Toshiba.

The first foray into Project Ara will include a set of camera modules. There will be two rear camera modules. One will offer up a lower-end 5MP camera to keep costs down to a minimum while still letting you take some snap shots. While the other will bump you up to a  13MP camera for those smartphone shutterbugs.

In addition to the two rear camera modules they will also be offering up a 2MP front shooting selfie camera. Because, well, selfies. I am not certain how that plays out yet as I was under the impression the front of Project Ara was just your screen. We will have to wait a bit and see how it all comes together.

Toshiba has plans to create a whole slew of modules for the project with NFC, memory expansion and their special Transferjet technology.

It is an interesting time in the smartphone world. Project Ara is certainly capturing the tech enthusiasts eyes. We will have to see how well these things all work out together or if it will end up being another one of those awesome Google projects that just sort of inspires the world and fades into the distance.
