First thoughts on FroYo

It’s been hard to part with the Eclair pastry that Cyanogen has brought to Nexus One owners, but the Frozen Yogurt was so tempting. Yesterday like the many others, I flashed the official FroYo ROM (FRF50) on my Nexus One . Here’s some thoughts after a day with FroYo…

  • It flys, the JIT (Just-In-Time) Dalvik Compiler is extremely fast
  • As promised, the browser is much faster
  • Flash works great, don’t expect the same thing as your desktop though. It’s still rough around the edges.
  • The stock keyboard is improved, personally it feels faster. Noticeably you can change your input language easily and a slight redesign of the suggestions.
  • The stock messaging app has changed, nothing noticeable though
  • Some apps like Handcent SMS force close, this could be because of broken API’s or the JIT Dalvik Compiler. Although I’m sure they will be fixed soon
  • I’ve yet to come across any apps that have built in support for apps2sd. Thankfully you can manually push all your apps2sd in a shell/terminal emulator using the command “pm setInstallLocation 2” without quotes
  • Briefly looking at tethering, there is no support for  USB Tethering on Mac OSX
  • Battery life seems better but I suppose it could be a placebo effect
  • On the current Nexus One build FRF50, protected apps don’t show in the market. There’s speculation that Google just needs to flip the switch which is likely.

That’s all for now but if there’s anything you care to know about that I’ve left unanswered feel free to drop a line in the comments and I’ll get back to you.
