Gamepop, Bluestacks’ rival to Ouya, will be priced at $129

gamepopLast month, we heard Bluestacks’ plan to release an Android 4.2 based game console called Gamepop to go head-to-head with the Ouya. We were mostly intrigued with the payment model Bluestacks had adopted; customers would be locked into at least a year’s contract while paying a $6.99 a month subscription fee in exchange for a library of over 500 games. Luckily, Bluestacks was also offering the Gamepop for free for anybody who pre-ordered the console before the end of May, but was a little vague on how much the console would cost after that date.

Well, we now know the price of the Gamepop will be $129 whenever it releases. This creates an interesting predicament as Gamepop, with its library of at least 500 games, was looking like quite good value at $83.88 in yearly fees compared to the $99 Ouya. Bluestacks also announced several new games to its Gamepop library from Intellijoy, the total retail price of which is nearly $30.

$129 does seem a little steep for Gamepop, on top of the monthly subscription fees, but its extensive library will suit those gamers who are liable to get their money’s worth. But fear not: Bluestacks has extended the preorder period where customers can order the Gamepop for free till the end of June, quoting “high demand of pre-orders”. Clearly there is a market for Gamepop, and if you like what you hear, better get in before the end of June.
